Rs.23 lakh sanctioned for research activities
STAFF REPORTER: The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Mumbai, has sanctioned
Rs.23 lakh for executing research activities to G. Vanmathi, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Kamaraj College, Tuticorin. The objective of the project is to synthesise various chemicals and pharmaceutical drugs using microtron beam treated catalysts. It also aims to modify the process of synthesizing life-saving drugs. According to a statement on Saturday from Kamaraj College, the Department of Atomic Energy supports extra-mural research and development activities in nuclear and allied sciences, engineering and technology through its nodal funding agency – The Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS). Among various particle accelerator centres installed by BARC, Mumbai, a variable accelerator – microtron — is installed and commissioned by Mangalore University. The DAE has recognised the Microtron Centre as a Centre for Excellence in Radiation Physics and Radiological Sciences. Thus the novel catalysts used by the Nobel Prize winners of previous years would be activated for having an enhanced catalytic activity. The results of this study may help in reducing the production cost of drugs. This may enable the pharmaceutical industries of India to compete with other industries in the world market and maximize their sales.Principal investigator of this project says that this is the first time that the microtron radiation facility of Department of Atomic Energy at Mangalore University has been used for enhancing organic compounds productivity. The work is carried out in collaboration with U.P. Senthil Kumar, senior vice-president, Research and Development, Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited, Chennai.
